Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
i guess that what would be expected from battles...
but if it turned into a war..
im thinking that the arsenal would be bigger...
the layout of the land would have to benefit both sides...
it would be going non-stop..
(but im still thinking that shaolin have an advantage with metal weapons...)
(untill the timeline went forward a couple of hundred years so the Maori would have european muskets too...)

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
well i watched the vid...
and what i noticed is that....
the shaolin monk... rather stays calm... having full control over his body... and also trying to do harm with more small and easier ways... you know... nifty
while the maori rather was a muscleman... trying to kill the opponent with pure strength and violence

yeah Maori use scare tactics, brute force, main weapon was taiaha (proved to be good but not as good as shaolin monk) they would never be able to match up against shaolin 1 on 1

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
Idk about shaolin's weaponry in that battle...
like the 4 weapons for shaolin monks were:
-Staff
-Emei piercers
-9- section whip
-Double Hook swords
About everything except the staff was upgraded a little...
here are what I mean by upgrades:
Staff ----> Spear -----> Halberd
Emei piercers ------> Butterfly knives
9- section whip -----> (nothing else)
Double swords ----> Double hook swords ----> Double broadswords
What about for maori, did they have any more advanced weaponry than what they showed on the show?

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
wow..
Maori weapons havent really upgraded.. just the style of combat uprgraded..
using different techniques to lure the opponant into a trap taking him off guard hence why i was a bit disapointed by the battle because of the time differences but nevertheless it was a good watch ^^

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
it would have nearly as good melee ability as a taiaha except that it shoots out ball bearings aswell as sharpened edge...
but still that wasnt untill the eurpeans came so like 100 years after the traditional weapons were considered the best that a maori would be equiped with...

Mostly because the traditional weapons were harder to use and master, than today's guns.

true.. Traditional weapons involve much more skill than a gun... it would require much more than a lesson aswell...

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
nice ^___^ i do believe you when it comes to learning how to wield a weapon of length it is defenately not easy.
im sure i said this earlier but all Maori boys that grow up the way i did had to go through the process of learning how to wield and use the Taiaha, Mere and Patu. it was a rightful passage to manhood (or so the Kau Matua said) -( the Kau Matua are the elders of the Maori in a specific area)
at the same time you learn how to carve from bone and wood to make tools and weapons aswell as cooking ( i love Maori food ^^ its so simple but delicious!)
i wouldnt call myself a pro at wielding the Taiaha but i know how to use one and defend myself if need be, aswell with the Mere. The Patu is more of a status symbol (i am the eldest boy in my family so i am considered highest in my family)

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
The Mere is a good weapon ^__^ and is still used in todays Maori teachings of weapon wielding.
lol a long time ago that was true, Maori became cannibalistic for 1 reason these people called the Mori Ori were taking land and because of their small numbers the maori didnt have to kill them all but show them that the Maori are not to be messed with so what happened was this 1 Maori Chief went to a Mori Ori settlement and killed everyone there he then made the survivors watch as he ate the flesh of the dead and cooked their decomposed bodies feeding it to his warriors doing this he said: "now that my warriors have tasted the flesh of the Mori Ori they will kill every single Mori Ori (this was on the North Island of New Zealand) well what the Chief said came true his warriors killed every single Mori Ori that came to NZ but were not able to kill the ones in the South Island because of the Maori Tribes were not agreeing with each other at that time. to this day there are under 1000 known Mori Ori people still living in New Zealand that carry the bloodline from their slain ancestors.
apparently the Maori were not the first people to claim and live on New Zealand.. there were other nomad tribes/ pirates/ missionaries.. that came to NZ aswell during this time. but the Maori integrated with the nomad tribes and learned english from the missionaries... not much was herd about pirates except that they were heavily sighted in the pacific ^__^
a history lesson ^___^
sorry i couldnt give names they were too hard to type and i forgot some lol

Re: Deadliest Warriors, Shaolin Monks vs. Maori
Dang there's some good history @_@
Here's some on shaolin monks' kungfu but I'm gonna paste it from wikipedia =D
Shaolin Kung Fu refers to a collection of Chinese martial arts that claim affiliation with the Shaolin Monastery. Of the tens of thousands of kung fu wushu styles, several hundred might have some relationship to Shaolin; however, aside from a few very well known systems, such as Xiao Hong Quan, the Da Hong Quan, Yin Shou Gun, Damo Sword, etc., it would be almost impossible to establish a verifiable connection to the Temple for any one particular art.
And my favorite style of kung-fu...
Zui Quan, literally Drunken Fist, also known as Drunken Boxing or Drunkard's Boxing) is a concept in traditional Chinese martial arts, as well as a classification of modern Wushu forms. Zui Quan is sometimes called Zuijiuquan (醉酒拳, literally "Drunken Alcohol Fist").
